AI Activities for Kids Ages 5–9

For children ages 5–9, AI learning should be concrete, playful, and connected to experiences they already understand.

A five-year-old does not need a technical explanation of machine learning.

They can understand patterns.

A seven-year-old may not need to use a chatbot.

They can understand that computers use information to produce results.

An eight-year-old can begin asking whether technology always gets the right answer.

Good AI activities for ages 5–9 include:

  • Sorting and classification games

  • Pattern recognition

  • Step-by-step algorithm games

  • Robot role-play

  • AI vocabulary cards

  • Storytelling

  • Matching games

  • Data activities

  • Technology scavenger hunts

  • Human-versus-computer discussions

Repetition matters

One reason AI terminology can be difficult for children is that the words are unfamiliar.

Hearing one definition may not be enough.

That's why AiDigiCards uses five different modalities to introduce concepts.

The ABCs of AI Activity Deck contains 130 cards spanning definitions, stories, activities, games, and optional audio.

Instead of encountering a word once, children can experience it several different ways.

The goal is AI literacy, not more technology

Young children have plenty of time to learn how to operate AI tools.

First, we can help them understand what those tools actually are.
